After being postponed twice, the third edition of the Caribbean Baseball Confederation (COCABE) has announced the Caribbean Baseball Cup will take place in Curaçao. This edition will introduce a new competition format.
It was first scheduled to be played in April, from the 16th through the 24th. Then, due to sanitary reasons, it was put off to May. But now, for the third – and apparently last – time, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Confederation to re-schedule it to June. This, according to the Confederation’s official social media accounts, is meant to be definite. The Caribbean competition is now set to start on June 26th, and end on July 3rd.
The third edition of the Caribbean Baseball Cup will be located in Curaçao. This competition, which holds the Dominican Republic as two-time and only champion so far, presents many curiosities apart from the fact of having been postponed twice in two months. The most relevant of them are its format, participating – and non-participating – national teams, and duration.
This edition of the Caribbean Baseball Cup has surprised fans with a new championship format. Participating teams will be divided into two groups: Elite and Development. This compromising decision has been disputed by fans, who understand that lower-level teams should face high-level ones to improve. Each group will have its own champion, and the COCABE has not made any announcements about them facing each other afterward.
Originally, the Elite group was composed of Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, and the hosting team Curaçao. On the other hand, the Development group included US Virgin Islands, Chile, Peru, and Haiti. However, Chile, Haiti, and Puerto Rico have already confirmed their withdrawal from the competition. This leaves the latter group with no more than two teams. We expect COCABE to make an announcement regarding this matter.
