The main goal is to provide a technical course of studies to young people who finish high school and want to develop in the sports industry while practicing their favorite sport.
The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (also known as AMLO), announced the creation of technical sports-oriented schools. These institutions are for young people who finish their scholarly studies and want to continue their studies in the sports world. The official course of studies will have the name “Associate Degree in Sports Management”.
The career will be of upper intermediate level and its content will be aimed at the formation of coaches, or any other sports-related specialty. However, while they study, students will have the opportunity to train and practice their favorite sports. In this way, they will see if they have the required skills to become professional players.

To begin with, this career will offer technical and practical training in three different sports: Boxing, baseball, and athletics. These will be divided into four officially certified courses of studies: Comprehensive Baseball Training, Comprehensive Boxing Training, Middle and Long-Distance Athletics Comprehensive Training, and Sports Physiotherapy.
“We want to give the opportunity to young people who finish high school to choose this sports-related course of studies, practice the sport they like, and become good athletes in three years’ time…” Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico.
Each course will have a 6-semester length (3 years), on a full-time basis with or without residency for those who do not live in the area. Seven facilities will be available, which students will attend depending on the sport of their choice. The certificate will have a wide reach, making it possible for graduates to develop in different sports management areas.
Students can access the School’s website during their third high school year, or after graduating. The site will require them to create an account, and an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide will show them the way to enroll. General information on school records will also be asked upon.
The first available courses will open in August this year, and inscription forecasts are quite optimistic. The goal is to have 210 students by 2024. Attractive health insurance, residence, and full maintenance will be also offered for those who need it and qualify for the program.
Finally, those who graduate despite their sports choice will be offered different paths to develop their knowledge and acquired experience. Positions ranging from high-performance athlete training to teaching in the National Education System will be at hand.
It is always good to learn about an entity that lets sports have the place it deserves, and that is exactly what AMLO is aiming at with this course of studies. In hope of its success and inspiration towards other public and private institutions, we salute Mexico for taking a big step towards sports integration.
